Acer Iconia A1-830 Review

Last year’s Acer Iconia A1-810 had promise but also some glaring shortcomings. The latest edition, the Iconia A1-830, offers significant improvements like somewhat more modern specifications for a price well under $200.

This is a 7.9-inch tablet with Android OS 4.2 (Jelly Bean). It comes in a metal and glass body, not a plastic one like its predecessor. The device is based on a dual-core Intel Atom processor, which will be the most important advancement for many users, because the previous Iconia A1 used unconvincing Mediatek hardware.

The design of the new device is also clearly more elegant, and the A1-830 is one of the smallest 7.9-inch tablets available.

Build and Design

The Iconia A1-830’s body is highly robust and solid — nearly on a premium level and not what you’d expect for a product that cost as little as this one does. The entire front side is covered in glass, the back in metal, while plastic is used only on control keys and the upper edge of the device, which is where the antennas are located.

Weighing 0.8 lbs. (380 grams), it is quite heavy for a 7.9-inch tablet and eventually becomes tiring if held only in one hand; however, since this is one of the slimmest tablets in the world, and as its edges are rounded, it feels great to hold.

The tablet’s dimensions are 8.0 x 5.4 x 0.3 inches (203 x 138 x 8.2 mm), making it roughly the same size as the Apple iPad mini, which it greatly resembles.

Display

The IPS LED backlight screen has a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, which is identical to the previous model and results in a relatively humble pixel density of 162 ppi. This is the identical resolution and size as the first iPad mini, which means the flaws are approximately the same as on that device: image sharpness is below average and individual pixels can be identified with the naked eye. There is also ‘teething’, especially when straight slanted lines are animated, as they are change their angle.

On the other hand, the contrast is above average, with very convincing black tones and somewhat dirtier white tones. Color interpretation, though, deserves a minus, as the colors are insufficiently saturated, with colder tones dominating.

It is clear that in order to maintain the relatively low price, Acer has compromised on the screen, the only feature that did not see an upgrade compared to the previous Iconia A1. Low pixel density and poorly interpreted colors are noticeable at first glance, and despite the premium feeling provided by the convincing and beautiful body, the display makes it clear this is a tablet for less demanding users.

Taking real-world use into consideration, however, the low resolution did not turn out to be a problem while watching movies, and the slim left- and right-size screen bezels made multimedia consumption on the 4:3 display quite bearable.

Buttons and Ports

The front of the Iconia A1-830 includes an Acer logo located under the display, and a 2-megapixel webcam, while the control keys (Back, Home and Tasks) take up a part of the user interface on the screen.

The rear includes another Acer logo as well as a 5-megapixel camera — like most tablets in this class, the A1-830 does not come with a LED flash. Stereo speakers are located at the bottom of the back side.

The upper edge includes an audio jack and and a micro-USB port, while the lower edge does not hold any elements. The left edge is equally blank, but the Power button, volume rocker, and microSD memory-card slot are on the right.

It’s a shame that the micro-HDMI video-out port was omitted from the latest Acer Iconia A1, as its predecessor included one.

Acer C314 Tablet PC – Our Full Review

The Acer C314 Tablet PC 

The Acer C314 Tablet PC is in many ways a breath of fresh air. It’s not that this model is the Tablet version of Acer’s popular “Ferrari” notebook. What makes this machine special are the nuances and little extras you’ll find that were thoughtfully engineered into the design.

The C314 Tablet PC also features the newest Centrino platform, “Sonoma”. The new chipset coupled by the very capable NVIDIA Go 6200 graphics GPU promises an extended future. Chances are good that the C314 is ready for the next generation of Windows “Vista” scheduled to hit the shelves in 2006.

C314 Design and Build Quality

There are noticeable design elements that make the Acer C314 Tablet PC unique. A most interesting innovation is the ergonomical “curved” keyboard. Another element is the design of the lid latch. The latch on the C314 is a reverse of the usual design. The hook itself is located on the lower base of the unit and the “slot” is in the display lid. The switch also locks to keep the display firmly in place. Finally, the design of the trackpad (although not entirely original) is simplicity that offers extra functionality, with the added 4-way scroll button located between the left and right mouse buttons.

Acer Predator 8 GT-810 Hands-On Preview: Android and Intel Tablet Gaming

Acer used IFA 2015 to launch an entire product line intended for gamers: Predator, and among other Predator products, an 8-inch, Android and Intel, Full HD tablet, the Predator 8. This is a direct rival to the Nvidia Shield tablet, which is also targeted at gamers, and it seems that Acer has designed a device with a PC gamer aesthetic.

The Acer Predator 8 definitely looks like a gaming machine.

To that end, the tablet features an aluminum body with a particular look that can almost be defined as aggressive, which is usual for a gaming product. It’s also characterized by four speakers located in the four edges of the front surface, covered in red perforations. The tablet has somewhat more elegant dimensions and is lighter than the Nvidia Shield, but is still rather massive for an 8-inch tablet, weighing .77 pounds and measuring .34 inches thick.

This design either makes the Predator 8 especially impressive or off-putting, depending on whether the user appreciates gaming’s aggressive bent. But even considering its relative thickness, it’s ergonomic and has a quality build. One thing is clear, it will turn heads.

Predator 8’s Full HD display is its strongest selling point. Its 283 pixel-per-inch density is perfectly solid for playing games on Android, and it provides a very good experience through its exceptional color saturation and powerful brightness. Of course, such colors are not pleasant for regular tablet usage, and the Predator 8 has an application that reduces them to a reasonable level of saturation.

The Acer Predator 8 has an Intel Atom X7, Intel’s eighth-generation HD graphic chip, 2GB of RAM and 32 or 64GB of internal storage.

It was not easy to realistically assess the four speakers at IFA, but they provided a loud sound despite the noisy ambience. A type of force feedback also helped us get a good feel for gaming. It’s called TacSence, but in testing Asphalt 8, which comes with this device, along with about $50 worth of gaming credits, it seemed more like regular vibration without any situational differences. We’ll have to test it further before passing judgement.

In terms of internals, the Acer Predator 8 has an Intel Atom X7 processor, which seems underwhelming compared to the Nvidia Shield’s Tegra K1 processor. With Intel’s eighth-generation HD graphic chip, 2GB of RAM and 32 or 64GB of internal storage, the games we tested on the Predator 8 at IFA ran without any problems or disruptions to the gaming experience. However, they were slightly slow to set up.

Software-wise, Acer Predator 8 is equipped with almost pure version of Android OS 5.1, with slight modifications from Acer, which boil down to arranging widgets across the home screen and the design of the notifications drawer. The home screen can be used in both landscape and portrait mode.

If not for the performance, the Acer Predator 8 should lure gamers with its price: $300 for the 32GB version. It will launch in Europe in October, while sales in the US will start on November 6th.

Acer Iconia A501 to be a 4G Tablet

The previously-revealed Acer Iconia tablet is getting a 4G boost thanks to AT&T, the wireless carrier announced at CTIA this week.

The Iconia A500 — which we got to spend some time with at PAX East earlier this month — will emerge as the A501 when it is on the AT&T network. The A501 will have the same specs as the currently unreleased A500, powered by an Nvidia Tegra 250 1 GHz dual-core processor while sporting a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a “high definition” front-facing camera for video chat.

The Iconia A501 will sport a 10.1-inch display and will run Google Android OS 3.0 (Honeycomb), complete with full access to the Android Market. It will also feature Flash 10.1 support, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, and an HDMI port for 1080p video out.

Pricing information for the 4G tablet is currently unknown. It is, however, expected to launch in the second quarter, at which point AT&T said that specific distribution at pricing will be announced.
